New Hampshire Highland Games
Saturday, September 17
The NH Highland Games is
one of the most diverse celebrations of Scottish Arts and Culture in the United
States, a unique blend of competitions, festival music, food, vendors and
activities that draws people from all over New England. The term “games” refers
to the many competitions, athletic and artistic, but the event is the
largest Scottish cultural festival in the Northeast dedicated to the
promoting of the music, dance, athletics and customs of the Scottish people and
Gaelic culture. See the Gathering of the Clans, where over 60 clans
and societies march over the hill playing bagpipes and drums onto the parade
grounds. The massed bands perform together and you’ll feel as if you’re in
Scotland! Enjoy fiddle, bagpipe and harp music, highland dance competition,
concerts, and the Highland Games themselves. The international field
of Strongmen will compete in traditional events that test raw strength and power
as well as athletic ability, such as the Farmer’s Walk (carrying weights
in excess of 600 pounds), the stone toss, caber toss (lift
a large pole, run with it and then toss it end to end). You’ll find ethnic and
traditional food, Celtic crafts, a vendor village, and multiple stages filled
with traditional and contemporary musicians and performers, and whiskey tasting
seminars (extra fee for tastings). $ 85

Boston Landmarks Part 2
Thursday, September 29
It is hardly surprising that New England's
largest and most important city is crammed full of spectacular landmarks
– you know them – the buildings you pass by
while
in town and say “oh I’d love to see the inside of that building someday!” If
you have ever been to the Prudential Center with us you have no doubt noticed
the beautiful buildings and fountains across the street that make up the
Christian Science Plaza. We will tour one of the most fascinating, the Mary
Baker Eddy Library where a docent will lead us through their many exhibit
halls and galleries including the world famous Mapparium. Standing three
stories tall, the Mapparium is a beautiful painted glass globe that is a
work of art in itself when viewed from the outside. But to traverse the 30 foot
glass bridge INSIDE the globe is truly breathtaking. Christened the Cradle of
Liberty, Faneuil Hall's vital role in revolutionary politics hadn't been
part of its original plans when it was built as a center of commerce in 1742.
Enjoy an informative talk given by a National Park Ranger on this
historic building as well as some time for lunch & shopping in the marketplace.
On our tour of the Massachusetts State House, discover the meaning of the
Sacred Cod that hangs in the House of Representatives chambers and the
wooden pinecone that sits atop the golden dome. End the day with a visit to
King’s Chapel. Formed in 1689, this active congregation’s past members
included Ben Franklin, Paul Revere & John Hancock to name a few. We will
enjoy a guided tour including the history & architecture of the church and
the adjacent Burying Ground, the oldest burying place in Boston proper. To
end our day in the city we will all enjoy a sweet treat from Mike’s Pastry,
a North End staple. $ 62
