Concord’s Literary Past

Thursday, August 12

We will visit Emerson House, the home of Ralph Waldo Emerson.  The house was a center for meetings of Emerson and his friends, and still contains original furniture and Emerson's memorabilia. It was here that Emerson wrote his famous essays "The American Scholar" and "Self Reliance," and that he entertained Bronson, Louisa May Alcott, Henry David Thoreau, and many others.  Enjoy Orchard House, home of Louisa May Alcott.  Here she wrote her classic work, “Little Women” and also set Little Women in this home, causing guests to comment that "a visit to Orchard House is like walking through the book”.  Next we’ll visit The Wayside, the only home owned by Nathaniel Hawthorne, author of “The Scarlet Letter”, and “The House of the Seven Gables”. Before Hawthorne bought it, the house belonged to Louisa May Alcott’s family and is currently preserved by children's author Margaret Sidney. The Wayside is the only National Historic Landmark lived in by three literary families.  Before departing Concord we’ll stop at The Concord Museum the one place where all of Concord's remarkable past is brought to life. The Concord Museum collection is a distinguished one containing numerous examples of 17th, 18th, and 19th-century decorative arts, all with histories linking them to Concord.  Lunch at the historic Colonial Inn is included (choice of their famous Chicken Pot Pie or Baked Salmon) originally built in 1716 as the home of one of Concord’s first settlers, and then home to Henry David Thoreau.
